ICOM Greece is affiliated to ICOM (International Council of Museums), an international organization acting as advisory body to UNESCO. It participates in all international activities organized by ICOM Offices, such as the International Museum Day, conferences, development of professional codes of ethics, etc. Members of ICOM Greece also participate in many international ICOM Committees that focus on specific aspect of museum work.
ICOM Greece was established in 1987 and since then it has as one of its core activities the provision of professional training to its members. It organizes various training activities, such as one-day seminars on conservation, education, museum design, museum architecture, etc. In addition it organizes workshops on subjects such as writing museum labels, basic conservation skills for curators, development of educational programs for museum professionals, etc. In addition, the members of the board are also members of the Museum Council of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports, thus bringing the views of professionals in the main advisory body of the Ministry regarding museums and cultural heritage. It has also organized many conferences and published many books, which are being used in University teaching regarding museum professionals of all categories. Finally, ICOM Greece publishes an annual newsletter that reaches museums professionals working in all relevant institutions in Greece.
